Give your bathroom a new lease of life

A bathroom is a very underrated room. It offers us with so much that we require in order to look good and feel good, and yet for some reason we never try to offer it the same thing. They end up being that little room full of clutter and damp marks on the wall where you forgot to buy the right kind of paint - it happens. But it's time for a change, it's time to make your bathroom a feature to your home, just like your living room is.

If you've ever been to a spa, you'll know what a lovely experience it is to go there. It's relaxing and you're able to fully let yourself go and indulge in all the wonderful things around you that are massaging your senses. Well, there's no reason that your bathroom can't have the same feel to it and become your secret getaway when you need to unwind after a busy day.

You can go as subtle or as extravagant as you wish depending on your circumstances and space. But even if you do have a rather small bathroom, doesn't mean that you can't achieve the same things, you just have to be a little bit more clever in the way you go about it as well as conscious of what tricks make a room look a lot bigger than it actually is. This is done by the colours that you use - the lighter the better, and also the use of mirrors that reflect light as it bounces off them, giving the illusion of more space in the area.

So if you want to know how you can spruce up your bathroom and give it a new lease of life rather than neglecting it - here are some ideas of what you can do.

Update the shower

If you've had the same old shower for a very long time, then it'll most likely be grubby with damp and mould around the bottom edges, and rusty over the shower head. This isn't necessary because you don't keep it clean, it's just something that happens over time. But there will come a point where it just doesn't like nice anymore, and that's when you know you've left it too late. It's time for a change, and since you're getting something new, why not go all out while you're at it? Just think about the walk in shower options you have if you want to take things to another level. These are brilliant because not only do they give you a nice bit of space, but there are so many different types available depending on the layout of your bathroom, so there is no reason you won't find something perfect to suit you.

Change the lighting

If you didn't already know - the lighting that you have has a huge impact on the overall mood of your home, and that goes for the bathroom too. Of course, you'll need a main light source that lights up the whole room so that you can see exactly why you're doing. But you may also want some lights fitted around your mirror as that may be the place that you do your makeup. So first think of all the functioning reasons. Then you can cover the laid back area of lighting. This means what you will have on when you take a bath or a shower. You don't want something harsh otherwise you won't be able to relax properly. A dimmer switch always works well because you have complete control over how bright (or not) you want the room to be. And don't forget the use of candles. Candles are a beautiful way to bring in a warm glow.

Add some colour

If your bathroom is looking a little dull and tired, then one very easy thing that you can do to drastically change its look, is to change the colour scheme - or apply one if you haven't already. Ideally, you want to choose two colours, a primary and a secondary. Your primary colour will be the main one that runs throughout your bathroom. The secondary is what you use to add little bursts around the room. That can be anything from little bits of decor like candles or flowers, even down to the toothbrush holders. Colours are a simple way to represent a mood or emotion, so have a think about how you want your bathroom to come across. Warm mochas always work well as the main shade, and then you can choose something a little bit more out there for the second, like wine red or peacock blue.
