Dappled Light at Pitzhanger Manor

If you fancy a pop of colour and a burst of joy head to Pitzhanger Manor in Ealing in west London to see the vibrant Dappled Light art installation by London artist Rana Begum. After seeing some pictures online I decided to take a little trip to W5 with my eldest daughter who is studying art GCSE.

If you are travelling by train, Ealing Broadway station is a short walk from Pitzhanger (about half a mile). We reached Ealing via Paddington. If you are travelling from our direction you can go from East Croydon to Farringdon, then Farringdon to Paddington - Paddington to Ealing Broadway. There are plenty of places to grab something to eat or drink in Ealing as well as loads of shops.

I booked online, under 18s go free and it cost me £7.70. The art and sculptures are all based on light and colour. The first impressive feature is called No 1081 Mesh and it is suspended under a stained glass domes ceiling. It is so pretty with the light shining through the dome.

The space is white and airy so all of the colourful work stands out really well.

The rest of the art is in Soane's 18th century country home in the next building. There is bright coloured netting hanging in the staircase and block sculptures made from colourful bicycle reflectors in the conservatory. There is also a time lapse video of the woodland and you can see some of the rooms in the manor.

Outside in front of the manor in the gardens work can be seen for free including No 184 a multicoloured glass sculpture and coloured mesh that is tied onto the bushes and trees. Being a Sunday there were activities outside for little children including a Little Builders session and story telling. We probably spent around half an hour wandering around so if you are travelling to see this you might want to combine it with something else. Ealing is pretty close to Kensington so you could head to a museum afterwards.

Behind the manor is Walpole Park which has a pond, plenty of open space and a playground and cafe.

We looked around some of the shops afterwards and headed back to the station and back to Paddington. As it was a nice day we decided to walk around Little Venice and look at the canal boats.

Dappled Light is on until September 2022 - Ealing residents can go for free every Sunday between 10am and 2.30pm and all day Wednesday. Under 18s go free. Adults £7.70.
